The IGP NWFP, Muhammad Raffat Pasha has strictly directed police high ups to maintain utmost vigilance and take stringent precautionary and preventive measures for peaceful observance of Muharram. He was presiding over a high level meeting at CPO Peshawar on Thursday to take stock of security arrangements for Muharram as well as review law and order situation in the province.
Additional IGP Investigation Masood Ahmad Paracha, Additional IGP Headquarters Khurshid Alam Khan, Chief Capital City Police Officer Muhammad Habib-ur-Rehman, DIGs Mardan, Kohat, Hazara, D.I. Khan, Malakand, Commandant FRP, AIGs traffic, telecommunication, CID and SSP Peshawar attended the meeting.
The IGP directed the participants to take effective steps for sectarian harmony and religious brotherhood and foil evil designs of miscreants and ensure fool proof security arrangements during Muharram.
They were also directed to hold meetings with the office bearers of peace committees, elected representatives, social organisations in the society and chalk out a well-calculated comprehensive plan with their suggestions.
DIGs were further directed to prohibit publishing of provocative pamphlets, literature, wall chalking and ensure that processions were taken out on fixed times and only selected routes have been used.
They were further directed to strictly implement ban on pillion riding and take stern action against displaying and keeping of arms as well as carry out strict checking of hotels, inns and other sensitive places. The IGP also directed for advance intelligence collection and adopting pre-emptive and preventive measures to ensure maximum security on Muharram.
The meeting also reviewed law and order situation of the province during the month of January 2005. The IGP took strong notice of increasing incidents of kidnapping particularly in Peshawar and Mansehra districts and both concerned DIGs were strictly directed to take concrete steps for the early recovery of the abducted persons and ensure that such incident could not happen in future.
The police chief also expressed dissatisfaction over the rising trend in car-lifting and car-snatching cases in Peshawar and CCPO and SSP were directed to bust the gang of car snatchers and smash their network and ensure sense of security to the life and property of the general public.
